YUCCA ROSTRATA

The Yucca rostrata, commonly known as Beaked Yucca, is a striking plant characterised by its slender, towering form and a spectacular crown of blue-green leaves. Its distinct appearance, featuring a thick, woody trunk topped with a spherical cluster of narrow, pointed leaves, makes it an architectural marvel in any garden.

Mature Height (metres): Typically grows to about 4-5 metres.
Mature Width (metres): Approximately 2-3 metres.
Spacing: Plant at least 2-3 metres apart from other plants to allow adequate room for growth and visual impact.
Foliage: Composed of long, narrow leaves that can reach up to 60 cm in length, with a blue-green hue that adds a cool tone to the landscape. The leaves are stiff and slightly curved, radiating outwards from the top of the trunk.
Flowering Period: Produces tall spikes of white, bell-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer, which stand impressively above the foliage.
Fruit: The flowers may develop into capsule-like fruits, though fruiting is rare in cooler climates.
Form/Habit: Features a single, thick trunk with a dense, spherical head of leaves at its top, resembling an exotic, oversized pom-pom.
Uses: Ideal for xeriscaping and desert-themed gardens due to its drought tolerance. It's also an excellent choice for creating vertical interest in rock gardens or as a specimen plant in large containers.
Sun: Thrives in full sun, needing bright exposure to develop its best form and leaf colour.
Maintenance: Very low maintenance; requires minimal care once established, other than occasional removal of dead leaves to maintain its tidy appearance.
Water Requirement: Low; highly drought-tolerant, needing only occasional watering once established, making it ideal for dry, arid environments.
